Life and Homes in Hampstead

James Rawes

With a population of over 8 million inhabitants, the metropolis of London is large by any global standards. And yet, what sets this city apart from many others is its varied and historical architecture, combined with a generous covering of green spaces, in the form of private garden squares, royal parks, heaths and commons. One of the most popular and significant is Hampstead Heath, an area of 790 acres 4 miles north west of the centre. Sitting astride a sandy ridge, the Heath commands imposing views over much of London to the south.

Adjacent to the Heath is Hampstead Village. Known for its intellectual, liberal, artistic, musical and literary associations, it has some of the most expensive housing in the London area, with more millionaires within its boundaries than any other area of the United Kingdom. At its centre is the London underground station on the Northern Line and the collection of smart shops, boutiques and restaurants rivals many of London’s more established shopping areas. The proliferation of high standard schooling in the area underlines the strong demand by a largely middle class population, much made up by those in the banking, media and entertainment professions.

Garrington has sourced homes in Hampstead for many clients over the years. Whether it be a 2 bedroom flat or a large, detached family house, the varied architecture of the area has satisfied most requirements. With its proximity to not only the Heath but with easy access out to the M4 and M25, Hampstead has proved a very popular place to live, especially for families. Neighbouring villages such as Highgate, Belsize Park and St John’s Wood also ensure the area is a thriving, cosmopolitan hub but with a country atmosphere.

Competition for property in Hampstead is therefore fierce, and without the help of a Hampstead property buying agent like Garrington, it can be extremely difficult to find, let alone secure a home in the area.
